- A new research centre for studying nanotoxicology Release date: 23 July 2008
The Health Protection Agency has set up a new centre to study the possible health effects of human exposure to nanoparticles. The National Nanotoxicology Research Centre (NNRC) is being developed at the Agency’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (CRCE) at Chilton in Oxfordshire. The Agency is collaborating with universities and the Medical Research Council's (MRC) Toxicology Unit to develop the centre and its research programme.

The third report annual report on HCAI, focusing on those infections subject to mandatory surveillance. The aims of this report are to identify key information on HCAI in England, demonstrating the burden of infection when possible, trends, notable events, impact of activities and gaps that need attention.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, remain one of the most important causes of illness due to infectious disease among young people (aged between 16 and 24 years old). If left untreated, many STIs can lead to long-term fertility problems (e.g.with Chlamydia or gonorrhoea). Infection with HIV or the strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) that cause cervical cancer can lead to long-term illness and possible death.

The European Space Agency recently announced that they had appointed the SEA (Group) Ltd to lead a team of experts, including the Health Protection Agency, to define the requirements and initial concept for a Biocontainment Facility to safely handle any samples which may be brought back from Mars.

The Health Protection Agency has reported a 6% increase in the total number of new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) diagnosed in 2007 compared to 2006. To coincide with the launch of the Agency’s fifth Annual Report and Accounts, figures are released today showing that across all age groups almost 400,000 (397,990) new STIs were diagnosed in UK genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics in 2007 – an increase from 375,843 in 2006.
