Essex Health Protection Unit

The Essex Health Protection Unit (EHPU) was formed from the merger of the North and South Essex Communicable Disease Teams on 1 April 2002. We have four doctors specialising in communicable diseases, non - communicable environmental hazards and emergency planning and six nurses specialising in communicable diseases and infection control.

The EHPU became part of the Health Protection Agency when it was established on 1 April 2003. We receive 4-5000 enquiries every year from healthcare workers and the general public in Essex. We publish factsheets and guidelines primarily intended for community healthcare workers, schools, local authorities and other agencies, and the general public locally. Some of the advice may not be applicable elsewhere. These web pages are designed to answer some of the most common questions.
