North East Region

The North East region of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) is coterminous with the Government Office for the North East and its associated 23 local and two county (Northumberland and County Durham ) tiers of local government. The region covers one strategic health authoritiy and 12 primary care trusts.

The Health Protection Agency North East operates as part of the Local and Regional Services Division of the HPA and provides a health protection service covering infectious, chemical, radiological and nuclear hazards to the population of the North East by:

• providing advice, guidance and operational support to the Government Office for the North East, the NHS and other agencies
• providing advice to the public
• contributing to the promotion of professional standards and the training and development of a range of NHS and other staff involved in public health protection
• undertaking research and development

The regional office is located in Newcastle upon Tyne and houses the Regional Director's office plus the Regional Environmental Public Health and Emergency Planning Unit, and the Regional Epidemiology Unit. Public health microbiology services are provided by the Newcastle Laboratory.

The region's health protection unit has two teams – the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear Team, which has offices in Newcastle and Sunderland, and the County Durham & Tees Valley Team which is based in Durham.

The Health Protection Agency North East's Regional Director's office houses regional business management, communications, administration and information technology departments.
