The Health Protection Agency South East (HPA SE) is coterminous with the Government Office for the South East (GOSE) and covers the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, and Surrey.
The South East region has a population of over 8.1 million (13.5% of the United Kingdom). It has the most rapidly increasing population in the country, most (75%) of which is due to migration from other areas of the UK. The age profile of the population reflects that of the rest of the UK. However, coastal and rural areas have a relatively older population. There is a mix of urban and rural environments and seven cities have populations exceeding 100,000.
HPA SE works with the National Health Service (NHS), local authorities and other relevant agencies to provide a health protection service. This includes the investigation and control of diseases due to infection, chemical and radiological hazards. The service is led by a Director. The Agency's regional and local staff has close links with the public health teams at GOSE, the four Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) and the 49 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), and 67 local authorities associated with them.
