The Health Protection Agency (HPA) for the Yorkshire and Humber region serves Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA) covering 14 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), 15 acute NHS trusts and 21 local authorities in the SHA area.
HPA Yorkshire and Humber provides specialist health protection advice, operational support and input to the development and implementation of policy to the National Health Service (NHS) and other agencies. These health protection services relate to communicable disease, chemical and radioactive hazards. The Agency trains and develops HPA and NHS staff, and undertakes the audit of health protection services.
At the regional level there is a Regional Director, business management, finance, communications and Information Management and Technology (IM&T) functions. There is also the Regional Epidemiology Unit and a Regional Health Emergency Planning Adviser, all based in Seacroft in Leeds, with the Regional Microbiology Network’s Food, Water and Environmetnal laboratory. There are three local Health Protection Units (HPUs) serving different parts of the region (North Yorkshire and Humber, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.) Each Unit has a director, consultants who are specialists in communicable disease, nurses and other staff with specialist health protection skills.
